11 Facts About Me

  1. I was born in a Chicago suburb and have lived in seven states. My rootlessness is one reason I resonate with the theme of pilgrimage.
  2. I fell in love with the printed word at the age of 4, on my father’s knee. He was a principal, teaching me to read using a new-fangled method called phonetics.
  3. I enjoy turtles. Slow is okay. Writing is slow.
  4. My alma mater is Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI). It’s the setting of Ruined.
  5. My husband thought he was marrying a writer, and then I went to seminary.
  6. I earned a Master of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (New Brighton, MN).
  7. I became a mother and a minister at the same time. When everything was new, both roles seemed impossible, much less the combination of the two.
  8. I returned to writing in a disciplined way in 1998 and published my first significant piece in 2012. My hope is to someday become an overnight success.
  9. I was a caffeine addict for decades, it’s a liability of life at the keyboard.
  10. My motto is: Love the Work.
  11. What propels my writing are the experiences that transform my faith: being the victim of violence, giving birth to my daughters, going on pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
