About Me

10 Facts About Me

  1. I was born in a Chicago suburb and have lived in seven states (IL, NJ, MI, WY, MN, NY, VA). My rootlessness is one reason I resonate with the theme of pilgrimage.
  2. I fell in love with the printed word at the age of 4, on my father’s knee. He was a principal, teaching me to read using a new-fangled method called phonetics.
  3. I enjoy turtles. Going slow is okay. Writing is slow.
  4. My alma mater is Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI). It’s the setting of my memoir, Ruined.
  5. My husband thought he was marrying a writer, and then I went to seminary.
  6. I earned a Master of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (New Brighton, MN).
  7. I became a mother and a minister at the same time. When everything was new, each role seemed impossible, much less the combination of the two.
  8. I returned to writing in a disciplined way in 1998 and published my first significant piece in 2012. My hope is to someday become an overnight success.
  9. My motto is: Love the Work.
  10. What propels my writing are the experiences that transform my faith: being the victim of violence, giving birth to my daughters, going on pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
